چکیده

We consider a scalar field theory in Minkowski spacetime and define a coarse grained Closed Time Path (CTP) effective action by integrating quantum fluctuations of wavelengths shorter than a critical value. We derive an exact CTP renormalization group equation and solve it using a derivative expansion approach. Explicit calculation is performed for the λφ4 theory. We discuss the relevance of the CTP average action in the study of non-equilibrium aspects ∗Electronic address: [email protected] †Electronic address: [email protected] 1 of phase transitions in quantum field theory.

How to measure the effective action for disordered systems

In contrast to standard critical phenomena, disordered systems need to be treated via the Functional Renormalization Group. The latter leads to a coarse grained disorder landscape, which after a finite renormalization becomes non-analytic, thus overcoming the predictions of the seemingly exact dimensional reduction. We review recent progress on how the nonanalytic effective action can be measur...

Quantum - Mechanical Tunnelling and the Renormalization Group

We explore the applicability of the exact renormalization group to the study of tunnelling phenomena. We investigate quantum-mechanical systems whose energy eigenstates are affected significantly by tunnelling through a barrier in the potential. Within the approximation of the derivative expansion, we find that the exact renormalization group predicts the correct qualitative behaviour for the l...

A nonequilibrium renormalization group approach to turbulent reheating

We use nonequilibrium renormalization group (RG) techniques to analyze the thermalization process in quantum field theory, and by extension reheating after inflation. Even if at a high scale Λ the theory is described by a non-dissipative λφ theory, the RG running induces nontrivial noise and dissipation. For long wavelength, slowly varying field configurations, the noise and dissipation are whi...

We review the formalism of the effective average action in quantum field theory which corresponds to a coarse grained free energy in statistical mechanics. The associated exact renormalization group equation and possible nonperturbative approximations for its solution are discussed. This is applied to QCD where one observes the consecutive emergence of mesonic bound states and spontaneous chira...

Renormalization-Group Study of Weakly First-Order Phase Transitions

We study the universal critical behavior near weakly first-order phase transitions for a three-dimensional model of two coupled scalar fields – the cubic anisotropy model. Renormalization-group techniques are employed within the formalism of the effective average action. We calculate the coarse-grained free energy and deduce the universal ratio of susceptibilities on either side of the phase tr...
